Fred Perry clothing – world famous fashion heritage.

Fred Perry clothing is one of the world’s most famous heritage brands. The laurel wreath emblem has long been one of the most instantly recognisable logos in the world of Men’s designer clothing. The company’s rich history dates back to three times Wimbledon tennis champion Fred Perry and prides itself on being the first UK brand to blend sportswear with streetwear.

Throughout the history of Fred Perry the brand has always stayed true to an ethos of integrity, authenticity and attitude. The idea for the clothing label began in the 1940’s and was actually the suggestion of Tibby Wegner, a former Austrian footballer. Surprisingly the very first ever item of Fred Perry clothing was a sweatband, which was quickly adopted by tennis players across Britain.

A key to the early success of Fred Perry clothing was the unique way the brand was marketed. Via their sporting contacts, Fred Perry and Tibby Wegner gave shirts and wristbands to all the leading players and BBC commentators. This resulted in mass brand exposure and helped raise demand for the brand.

Fred Perry polo shirts – the world famous laurel wreath that nearly went up in smoke

The laurel wreath featured on all Men’s Fred Perry polo shirts and clothing nearly never was. Originally, Fred actually considered a pipe as the company logo. As a keen pipe smoker, Fred Perry felt this was something he was synonymous with and would look cool. However, Tibby managed to convince him this was not the way forward, a very important intervention for the brand you might say!

Having discarded the idea of a pipe logo, the partners began to search for a more appropriate logo to launch the brand with. Since winning Wimbledon in 1934, Fred Perry had always worn a laurel wreath on his Davis cup touring blazer, he saw this as an historical symbol, honouring success from classical times. The decision was then made to use this on all Fred Perry clothing and the rest you would think is history, but it was not as easy as that.

The problem was Fred Perry had never quite won over the hierarchy of British tennis and he knew he would need the approval of the All England Tennis club. Even so his determination to set up Fred Perry clothing meant he approached the All England club anyway and his delight he managed to obtain written permission to use the laurel wreath.
