The history of Jeans - more cotton than you can shake a stick at!

Jeans are full length trousers made from denim. Evolving from the 16th century when they were originally designed as versatile working clothing, they have formed a popular form of dress for people of all ages - ranging from men to women, and from babies to OAPs .

Back then, jeans were actually made from silk or wool. As time has progressed, denim has progressed and evolved - being woven from one coloured thread (the warp) and one white thread (the weft). This provides a strong, tough, lasting garment.

Jeans started becoming ‘fashionable’ in the 1970s and now come in various styles and fits which include: skinny, tapered, straight, boot cut, flare, low crotch, arc, twisted, and many more. A vast array of colours and washes are also used, including black, grey and stone; however, blue remains the most popular colour, being dyed from indigo ink.

The word "jeans" comes from the French phrase "bleu de Gênes", literally the "blue of Genoa". Jeans fabric, or denim, originated independently in two places: the French town of Nîmes, from which 'denim' (de Nîmes) gets its name, and from Dongari Killa in India, from which the word 'dungarees' came.

Manufacturing processes for a pair of designer jeans

With so many colours and styles of jeans, the methods used to manufacture them also vary; however, they all pretty much follow the same pattern. First of all the denim is laid out, and a pattern of the denim is drawn. It is then cut into different sections, which are then stitched together.

Next the jeans are washed with hundreds of litres of water and sometimes pumice stones are used to give that stone wash look. Some jeans are also sandblasted.

After this, buttons, zips and rivets are attached using a press. A quality control inspection takes place after each process, when the standards are met, the jeans are despatched to retailers such as Bridge55 - then we can supply them to you!
